Book Review: Last Night I Sang to the Monster by: Benjamin Alire Saenz

I read his story in middle school but I still remember it rather vividly. This book is about a teenage guy who has a troublesome home life and then himself, falls into a downward spiral of substance abuse. This tells of his stint in rehab and thoroughly dives into the raw mind and thoughts of Zach, the main character, as he figures out the real demons behind his drinking and discovers how he even got sent to rehab in the first place.

A very interesting and dark book, as it deals with substance abuse. I ended up liking Zach as a character though and was impressed by the author’s authenticity when dealing with someone who has a real problem and the raw process of their emotional, mental, and spiritual path to recovery.
